Via Ferrata Piz da Lech

Piz da Lech: short via ferrata, immense panorama over the Dolomites.

Geographical location
Campolongo Pass opens at 1875 metres above sea level, on the border between Veneto and Trentino-Alto Adige, immediately east of the Sella Group. It connects Arabba, in the Cordevole Valley, with Corvara in Badia.
Piz da Lech (or Piz da Lech de Boè) is located on the north-eastern edge of the same Sella Group, in the province of Bolzano, at 2913 metres, in a dominant position over Corvara and the Colfosco area. Campolongo Pass, together with the Pordoi, Sella and Gardena passes, closes the famous Sellaronda ring around the Sella Group.

Hike
The Piz da Lech via ferrata climbs a rocky bastion on the eastern side of the Sella Group up to the summit of the same name. The approach can be short, using the Boè cable car and the Vallon chairlift up to 2530 metres, or more challenging, starting from Campolongo Pass and walking up or, as in this case, partly by mountain bike.
The protected route winds between walls and forks, alternating steep sections with two vertical ladders. The elevation gain remains contained, just 300 metres, and the overall difficulty is never excessive; however, there are a couple of athletic passages that require good climbing technique, in a generally exposed context.
The view, along the entire route and especially from the summit, extends over the Val de Mesdì, Corvara in Badia, Piz Boè and the Marmolada, as well as the Conturines Group, Piz Pisciadù, the Tofane, Antelao, Pelmo and Civetta, together with numerous other Dolomite peaks.
On the return along path 646, there are still some protected sections: so it is advisable not to remove the harness once you reach the summit. The equipment on the entire route is, moreover, in excellent condition.

History and curiosities
The name Lech is not an isolated case in the Ladin place names of the Dolomites: it simply means lake, as also shown by the nearby Lech de Boè (the small lake just below the mountain station of the cable car of the same name) and other bodies of water in the area, from Lech de Lagació to Lech dl Pisciadù – the small circular lake in the heart of the Sella Group is called Lech de Boè in Ladin. The Piz da Lech de Boè therefore takes its name precisely from this small lake, which is located a short distance from the cable car's mountain station.
Campolongo Pass, although the lowest of the four Sellaronda passes, has a recent history: the road that crosses it was built between 1898 and 1901, connecting South Tyrol and the Belluno area stably for the first time.

ITINERARY
From Campolongo Pass (1875 m) you ascend along a dirt road, trail marker 638. After reaching the Boè Cable Car Mountain Station (2193 m), continue on the 638 and, passing by Lake Boè (2250 m), you arrive at a junction near the Kostner mountain hut. From here follow the 646B and, after passing the Vallon Chairlift Mountain Station (2520 m), you reach the junction for the Piz da Lech Via Ferrata.
From the start (2580 m) you ascend along a small gully, overcome vertical and exposed traversing sections and arrive at two metal ladders. In the final section you cross a short iron bridge, climb a well-holded wall and, after some rocky steps, you enter the final high-altitude path that leads to the summit cross of Piz da Lech (2913 m).
The return takes place by descending along path 646 to the Boè Cable Car Mountain Station: there are also some short protected passages on this section. From there you return to the starting point by retracing the same outward route.
